That look of naughty merriment was likewise reflected in the mirror, with so much breadth and intensity of effect, that it made Hester Prynne feel as if it could not be the image of her own child, but of an imp who was seeking to mould itself into Pearl's shape. The Scarlet Letter 2 of 394 EDITOR’S NOTE Nathaniel Hawthorne was already a man of forty-six, and a tale writer of some twenty-four years’ standing, when ‘The Scarlet Letter’ appeared. Pearl pointed upward, also, at a similar picture in the head-piece smiling at her mother, with the elfish intelligence that was so familiar an expression on her small physiognomy. In truth, she seemed absolutely hidden behind it. Hester looked, by way of humoring the child and she saw that, owing to the peculiar effect of this convex mirror, the scarlet letter was represented in exaggerated and gigantic proportions, so as to be greatly the most prominent feature of her appearance. Little Pearl-who was as greatly pleased with the gleaming armour as she had been with the glittering frontispiece of the house-spent some time looking into the polished mirror of the breastplate. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Solaris lem![]() ![]() It was as if the child’s innocent game had prophesied a horrific turn in history, and Lem wonders if he’d sensed some calamity looming on the horizon-if his game had sprung “perhaps from some unconscious feeling of danger.” Equipped with these eccentric toys, he would then privately access fictional places “not to be found on any map.” Some years later, when his family was fleeing the Nazis, Lem notes that they escaped certain death with the help of false papers. ![]() In his autobiographical essay “ Chance and Order,” which appeared in The New Yorker, in 1984, Lem recalls how as an only child growing up in Lvov, Poland, he amused himself by creating passports, certificates, permits, government memos, and identification papers. The science-fiction writer and futurist Stanisław Lem was well acquainted with the way that fictional worlds can sometimes encroach upon reality. In Stanisław Lem’s writing, perverse invention and rational coherence lock into each other at weird, compelling angles. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Rebel spirits lois ruby![]() Synopsis: The two main characters are Dana and James, about the same age. Before I get into all that let me give you the synopsis. ![]() There are lots of things I want to say about this book, I hope I don't forget anything. Here is the book so if you want to read it here it is- Steal Away Home. Steal Away Home is a very good story that is why i gave it a five star rating. I also feel that this story is very detailed in how they survived. In this story you will find out how Dana and Liz interact and how Dana lives with using the underground railroad system. They find out that a girl named Liz lived back then and she was known for skinning women. Then they had a doctor come out, they realized that the bones where around the 1800's! When they were looking around the house to see if there was anymore suspicious things the find a diary which had more interesting facts about why there was skeletons in the house. Dana was very confused why there was skeletons in the place that was supposed to be for other people to stay there. ![]() When she was tore off wallpaper and noticed there was a skeleton under the paper. ![]() A girl named Dana was working on a house for a bed and breakfast, which was also going to be the house she and her family lived in too. The book Steal Away Home was a realistic fiction story. ![]() ![]() Be willing to overextend yourself to the point that others think it’s unreasonable. ![]() Limiting the success that you desire is a violation of the 10X Rule. If you are not yet successful, you have reason to suspect both your actions and thoughts. Success needs a grander mindset than most people have. The rule requires that you act in a wildly different way than you have been doing to achieve your wildest dreams. That is the assumption behind the 10X rule. To be successful, you need 10X more effort and commitment than the average person. The 10X Rule is an excellent book that champions commitment as a way of achieving extraordinary results. ![]() To be successful is the ethical thing to do. Cardone says that you should approach success as a duty, obligation, and responsibility. It argues that to be successful, you must be willing to work 10 times harder (10X) than everyone else. The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone is a book on success. 7/3/2023 0 Comments Needles by andie dominick![]() The medic asks his partner, "Is 29 low?"Īt the hospital she insists that her husband, Doug, drive her to another hospital after not only the ambulance drivers but also nurses and doctors don't listen when she tells them her blood sugar is low and they aren't treating her. ![]() My favorite part of the book is the chapter "Anger." In an ambulance on the way to a hospital one medic tests Andie and gets a reading of 29. Denise, even more defiant, paid for her freedom with her life. A rebellious teenage, Andie skipped her shots to lose weight and subsequently needed several operations on her eyes. This book is the story of her sister, herself, her family, and how they struggled with diabetes. Andie was diagnosed in 1980 at the age of nine. Denise had been diagnosed with diabetes in 1961 at the age of 2. She secretly played with them and even gave her dolls shots before meals, just like Denise had to do.Īll too soon Andie had her own syringes. When Andie was a girl, the syringes that her sister Denise used to inject herself with insulin fascinated her. ![]() This book is a highly moving memoir of growing up with diabetes. This book would have to be the selection as the book of the year. For a book this powerful, this well written, and this interesting, that would be faint praise indeed.
